Say goodbye to Jimmy Connors versus Aaron Krickstein. Desperate networks covering the U.S. Open on a rainy day won?t need to rerun that classic 1991 fourth-rounder much longer, because the U.S. Tennis Association has finally decided to build a retractable roof over gargantuan Arthur Ashe Stadium. The specific plans will be unveiled on Thursday, but an official has confirmed that the roof will be part of a general $500 million overhaul of the National Tennis Center in Queens, a ?complete transformation,? likely to require even more funding. The roof could theoretically be in place for the 2016 tournament, if all goes well. But of course not everything goes well in New York. Construction plans, still incomplete, must be approved by city and state boards. Approval for the roof shouldn?t be as complicated or controversial as the proposal for a new soccer stadium nearby, however, since it requires no additional parkland. While this will not exactly transform the U.S. Open Michael Kors Hamilton Tote into Wimbledon, or turn sterile Ashe Stadium into cozy Centre Court, the move represents an urgently needed improvement Michael Kors Astor Handbag for the Flushing Meadows facility. The last five men?s finals have been rained out, and the tournament has been extended an extra day far too often. Starting this year, the men?s final is scheduled for a third Monday, which means a rainout would push it to Tuesday and an absurd 16th day. By comparison, Wimbledon is held over just 13 days of play. Corey Sipkin/New York Daily News A roof over massive Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens is part of $500 million overhaul. Ashe Stadium itself, which seats 22,500, remains an aesthetic disaster, far too large to hold the interest of a fan sitting in the top rows. But at least now, ticket holders will see some tennis regardless of Michael Kors Python Handbag weather. RELATED: A CHAMPIONSHIP VENUE FOR QUEENS The size of the stadium had posed a considerable problem for architects asked to design a retractable roof. Like nearby Citi Field, which does not have a basement, the Tennis Michael Kors Python Center is built on relatively soft landfill with a high water line. That means the roof, which must cover an area five times larger than the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon, can?t be too heavy. The USTA commissioned four studies over the past decade to solve the problem. According to Sports Business Journal, the roof at Ashe would be a translucent composition called PTFE, the same translucent material being used on the Minnesota Vikings? new stadium. But this is a more complicated construction. According to initial plans, only part of the roof will be immovable, protecting some spectator seats from the elements. Andrew Theodorakis/New York Daily News A roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium is an urgently needed improvement for the National Tennis Center. Playing at a tournament in Cincinnati, Serena Williams said she approved of the plan, and had been briefed on a few basic details. ?Obviously it?s going to be great,? she said.  ?It?s going to take a really long time. They have a long-term plan, super long-term, and it?s not going to happen next year or the year after. It?s going to be awhile. It?s good to know that they?re going for it.? If nothing else, this improvement should greatly increase revenues for the USTA from networks bidding for the broadcast rights of the Open. The tournament will be able to guarantee Michael Kors Hamilton a set schedule of matches, regardless of weather. No more reruns. The only sighting of Connors, then, may be in the player?s box of Maria Sharapova, if he is still coaching the Russian Michael Kors Hamilton Satchel star and she is still playing. If so, her shrieks will be echoing off a new roof. ???????: Nike Team Uniforms NHL Jersey Online For Sale Whol

The new six-part CBS series ?Brooklyn DA? does a good job of humanizing the ?system? by which bad guys are held accountable for bad deeds. In Tuesday?s first Michael Michael Kors Handbag episode, that means following the people in the Brooklyn district attorney?s office who are Michael Kors Python Handbag trying to trap an art thief, convict a nasty pimp and console the family of a police officer killed on duty. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes himself is pretty much a nonpresence. His office is portrayed glowingly, however, as a team of serious professionals uniformly dedicated to justice. Nothing here Michael Kors Stores is going to hurt his current campaign for reelection, though nothing specifically boosts it or even mentions it. (In a suit filed by a Hynes campaign rival, a judge on Thursday ordered CBS to turn over all communications it had with the Brooklyn District Attorney?s Office about the production and promotion of the documentary in a bid to clarify if Hynes had any editorial control over the production. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Paul Wooten also indicated he will subpoena two producers of the documentary.) Purely Michael Kors Python as a TV show, ?Brooklyn DA? feels like a hybrid, both in genre and content. A heart-wrenching segment on the death of Police Officer Peter Figoski Michael Kors Hamilton includes saddened comments from his four still-stunned daughters. We see the DA?s office quickly offering consolation. We don?t get to the prosecution, which ended this February with the killer drawing 45 years to life. The prosecution gets more complex when Kathleen Collins goes to trial against a man charged with enslaving teenage girls as prostitutes. We see Collins prepare the case, edit her opening argument and encourage a victim who is fearful about facing the perp in open court. Collins talks about her passion for taking human traffickers down, which doesn?t mean the case necessarily will go as she planned in court. As a sort of balance against these two somber segments, we also get Assistant District Attorney Lawrence Oh interspersing work on the art theft case with bemused tips on how to eat at your desk. In the end, ?Brooklyn DA? suggests any process involving human beings, even with something Michael Kors Handbag Sale as crucial as justice, always will be imperfect. With that caveat, it tells us Brooklyn is in caring hands. dhinckley@nydailynews.com ???????: Nike Team Uniforms NHL Jersey Online For Sale Whol

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Six Republican presidential candidates dove deep into how their religious faith influences their public life, during a free-flowing forum before a large, influential audience of social conservatives in early-voting Iowa on Saturday. At an event sponsored by an Iowa Christian group, the candidates tried at times to gain a political edge with potent Iowa conservatives. But some of the discussion turned uncharacteristically personal, with the would-be presidents tearfully revealing formative chapters that shaped their faith. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose recent rise has renewed scrutiny of his two divorces, admitted taking the advice of a recovering alcoholic to soothe the demons he had treated for years with his own national ambition. ``I wasn't drinking but I had precisely the symptoms of someone who was collapsing under this weight,'' Gingrich said. ``And I found myself, this emerging national figure ... trying to understand where I had failed, why I was empty and why I had to turn to God.'' Businessman Herman Cain, accused of sexually harassing four subordinates more than a decade ago, didn't address the accusations which he has denied vigorously. But he acknowledged not being Michael Kors Shop Online home enough during his career's meteoric rise to the top of a national restaurant chain, and he credited his marriage with helping him after being diagnosed with cancer in 2006. ``Before my wife and I were about to head to the care, I said, `I can do this,''' Cain recalled. ``She said, `We can do this.''' The event occurred while many evangelical conservatives, a powerful force in Iowa's caucuses,Michael Kors Outlet Cheap Michael Kors Handbags Outlet Online (16), still look for a more conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has not courted this segment of the voting bloc aggressively in his second bid for the GOP nomination. The format was a sharp departure from the 10 GOP debates that have already been held in the 2012 campaign. Instead of the rapid Michael Kors Bags questions and timed answers of the televised debates, Saturday's forum was held around a large dining table on a stage with fall-themed decorations, aimed at resembling a family Thanksgiving dinner scene. Pollster Frank Luntz moderated the two-hour event,Michael Kors Outlet Online Cheap Michael Kors Handbags Outlet Online \(41\), which often flowed conversationally. Notably absent was Romney, a leader in most national and Iowa polls this year but who has not campaigned vigorously for the social conservative vote. Also missing was former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who is focusing his early-state campaign on New Hampshire, where his moderate positions on gay rights are not as glaring a liability. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has campaigned aggressively for the support of evangelical conservatives in Iowa,Site Michael Kors Cheap Michael Kors Handbags Outlet Online (12), tearfully confessed to have resisted loving his severely disabled daughter. ``I had decided that the best thing I could do was to treat her differently and not love her the way I did because it wouldn't hurt as much if I'd lost her,'' Santorum told an audience of 3,200 in Michael Kors Purse Outlet a large, evangelical Des Moines Michael Kors Bags Outlet church. And Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann described the pain and uncertainty of her parents' divorce when she was an adolescent girl, but held back somewhat when asked what prompted her Christian awakening when she was 16. ``It is amazing to me how God uses those challenges to shape your life,'' Bachmann said of her parents' divorce, noting how it influenced her decision to foster more than 20 children in addition to her five biological children. Texas' two candidates, Rep. Ron Paul and Gov. Rick Perry, did not offer revealing chapters from their lives as the others did. Paul described his early life during the Depression in Pennsylvania, and Perry, his upbringing in rural west Texas. Perry also described feeling lost upon his discharge from the Air Force at age 27. ``I couldn't understand what it was that Michael Kors Handbags Outlet Online was missing out of my life,'' Perry said, describing the moment he turned to his Christian faith. ``In every person's heart and soul there is a hole that can only be filled by the Lord Jesus Christ.'' Santorum was the most aggressive in trying to establish political edge during the event, arguing that the president must be a cultural warrior pushing for social change that reflects the nation's Judeo-Christian heritage. Despite the religious theme, the discussion nevertheless revealed deep divisions about the role of government in shaping the nation's culture, illustrated by the libertarian-leaning Paul's rejection of an activist presidency. ``The goal of government isn't to mold society and mold people,'' Paul said. ``The goal of government is to preserve liberty.''
